Plant a tree

You are going to join our challenge, and we thank you for doing so. That's why we are going to explain what you need to do to plant a tree. It's very easy!

1. Dig a hole that is wide enough for the roots to spread out. Remove the tree from its container and carefully trim any broken roots.

2. Place the tree in the hole prepared for planting. Always lift the tree by the root ball (the mass of soil used for transplanting) and never by the trunk. Spread the outer roots outwards.

3. Using a shovel, add some soil. Check that the depth is adequate and that the tree is straight. Fill the hole carefully and firmly. Compact the soil around the base of the root ball.

4. It is not recommended to apply fertilizer at the time of planting. But you should water it abundantly. Do not try to support the tree with stakes. The sooner the tree can stand on its own, the sooner it will grow stronger.

5. Continue to care for the tree after planting it. Protect it from pests and diseases by removing nearby plants that could cause damage. Remove weeds that compete with the tree's roots for moisture and nutrients.

6. If necessary, space the trees appropriately to avoid competition for air and soil nutrients, and encourage branch growth.

If you don't have space to plant a tree, contact your local city hall, or better yet, organize a joint effort with a school to organize a larger initiative. Let's plant a tree together!
